Who is exposed to the occurrence of food allergies?
A fairly good indicator of the risk of allergies is the history of allergic symptoms in the family. Children with one of their parents who are allergic are twice as likely to develop sensitization as those who are not allergic to their parents. If both parents are allergic, the risk increases six times. It turns out that children who are breastfed have less allergy symptoms than those fed with milk substitutes. Therefore, especially children who are allergic to close relatives should be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life.
How often do you experience food allergy?
Food allergy occurs much less often than we expect. However, so far only a few studies have been carried out that reliably assessed the incidence of food allergy and food intolerance. According to these studies, food allergy occurs in 1 to 2% of adults. In children it is more often found - 3 to 7% of children. Fortunately, 80 to 90% of children "outgrow" allergies after the third year of life. Most often, allergy to eggs and cow's milk subsides. However, allergy to nuts, legumes, fish and seafood usually lasts throughout life.
