What is melatonia
.
Melatonia is a hormone that is produced in the human body by the gland located within the brain, the pineal gland. The main task of melatonin is to regulate the daily cycle of sleep and wakefulness and the rhythm of the seasons.
The operation of the biological clock is regulated by the access of light, which inhibits the production of melatonin. Therefore, melatonin synthesized and released in the largest amounts at night. In humans, the biological clock regulated by changes in the production and secretion of melatonin begins to work around the 20th week of life, but with age its functioning deteriorates. Problems sleeping at night, early morning wake-up or naps during the day are the result of reduced production of melatonin. The reason for this is changes in the pineal gland that gets calcified with age and have less ability to produce melatonin.
Due to the above, melatonin has been used in the treatment of circadian rhythm disorders, as a means of facilitating falling asleep also in disorders associated with sudden change of time zone and the preparation can be purchased in a pharmacy without a prescription. The importance of melatonin for the body is not limited to those described above but also applies to other important physiological and hormonal functions.

Melatonin in the fight against free radicals
.
At the beginning of the 90s an important function of melatonin was discovered, which consists in "sweeping away" free radicals, ie compounds whose excess in the body is referred to as oxidative stress. Oxidative stress leads to many diseases, posing a threat to health and life. According to the free-radical theory of aging at a later age, free radicals are produced in larger quantities, additionally the natural defense mechanisms are compromised, which allow to maintain the level of radicals at a level that is harmless to health. An excess of radicals has a detrimental effect on the biological components of the human body, changes their structure and properties. The results of recent studies indicate that oxidative stress is responsible not only for the aging of the body but also plays a key role in the development of many diseases, including cancer.
.
Antioxidative properties melatonin for health
.
Currently, the results of many studies are known, which confirmed the antioxidant properties of melatonin, or its ability to neutralize free radicals. It has been found that melatonin protects genetic material (DNA) against dangerous oxidative damage (i.e. caused by free radicals). The melatonin's potential in this area is 60-70 times higher than other substances known for its antioxidant properties, eg vitamin C, Another property of melatonin is to stimulate the body's natural defenses against radicals. Compounds and enzymes are present in human cells whose function is to prevent the formation of oxidative stress. Melatonin may increase their amount or activity. Additional protective properties of melatonin consist in limiting the formation of radicals in the course of important life processes such as breathing.

Other beneficial effects on the body
.
♦ DNA protection
With age, the number of adverse changes in the genetic material of the so-called mutations that pose a risk of disease. The cause of the mutation may be various environmental factors such as X-rays. Melatonin can reduce the harmful effects of these substances on the body.
.
♦ protection of the nervous system
A very valuable property of melatonin also consists in limiting the death of nerve cells and adverse changes in the nervous system related to the formation of Alzheimer's disease.
.
♦ limiting cancer
Another proven property of the hormone produced by the pineal gland is the limitation of the process of carcinogenesis, i.e. by inhibiting the division of cancer cells and the effect on the release of other hormones and substances involved in this and also by stimulating the activity of the immune system. With age, immune functions deteriorate which may be the cause of the development of chronic infections and serious diseases such as cancer.
.
♦ Strengthening of immune mechanisms
The therapeutic effect of melatonin is to strengthen the body's defenses. There are known results of clinical trials that confirm the beneficial effect of melatonin on the health of people suffering from cancer. It has been proved that this is primarily the effect of improving the quality of night sleep and taking melatonin can be a valuable supplement to chemotherapy and surgery. However, it is important to carry out appropriate tests that will allow to determine the melatonin's properties, its absorption and excretion by the body, the most therapeutically effective doses, time and length of the drug.
