Treatment of acute and chronic bacterial infections of the eye (conjunctivitis, cornea, blepharitis and lacrimal sac, barley). Prophylactically before eye surgery.
Composition:
1 ml drops contains 3 mg of Amikacin in the form of sulphate. The drug contains benzalkonium chloride.
Action:
Aminoglycoside antibiotic in the form of an ophthalmic preparation. Amikacin is effective in the treatment of ocular inflammation caused by coagulase-negative and coagulase-positive staphylococci (includingStaphylococcus aureus andStaphylococcus saprophiticus), Pseudomonas spp. (includingPseudomonas aeruginosa), Serratia spp., Proteus spp., Escherichia spp., Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to aminoglycoside antibiotics or to any of the excipients (in particular benzalkonium chloride).
Precautions:
Prolonged use of the antibiotic may lead to the development of resistant strains and secondary bacterial or fungal superinfection (do not use longer than necessary). The use of drops can be started before the results of the antibiogram are obtained. In case of infectionPseudomonas aeruginosa, due to the risk of severe eye damage and loss of vision, Amikacin should be administered topically and parenterally. Aminoglycoside antibiotics applied systemically to open wounds or damaged skin may have ototoxic and nephrotoxic effects; this effect is dose-dependent and increases in the case of renal or hepatic failure. Use with caution in patients with renal insufficiency. If you experience signs of hypersensitivity, manifested by eyelid pruritus, edema or long-lasting inflammation, you should stop using the medicine immediately. Drops contain benzalkonium chloride, which may cause punctate keratitis and / or toxic ulcerative keratitis or eye irritation, and may discolour soft contact lenses. Before taking the drug, contact lenses should be removed; they can be put on again 15 minutes after instillation. Patients should be advised that contact lenses should not be used if eye infections are present.
Pregnancy and lactation:
There are no data on the use of the drug in pregnant women and breast-feeding.
Side effects:
Very rare: nonspecific conjunctivitis, burning, itching, irritation and hypersensitivity reactions manifested by redness, itching, swollen eyelids. In some patients with severe corneal damage, very rare cases of corneal calcification associated with the use of eye drops with phosphate content have been reported.
Dosage:
1-2 drops into the conjunctival sac 3-4 times a day for 7-10 days. When using several topical ophthalmic medications, a 15-minute break should be allowed between instillation of subsequent preparations.
