Symptomatic treatment of conditions associated with swelling and hyperaemia caused by irritants such as dust, smoke, contact lenses, wind, bright sunlight, chlorinated water, cosmetics, as well as in allergic inflammatory conditions such as hay fever and allergy to grass pollen . The preparation relieves accompanying symptoms such as burning, pruritus, painfulness, excessive tearing and irritation.
Sympathomimetic drug, imidazoline derivative in the form of topical formulation. The likely mechanism of action is to stimulate α-adrenergic receptors and little effect on β-adrenergic receptors. Tetryzoline applied topically to the conjunctival sac constricts the blood vessels, reducing congestion and swelling of the conjunctiva. The effect of the drug usually occurs after a few minutes and lasts for 4-8 hours. Tetrycoline administered to the conjunctival sac can be absorbed into the bloodstream and cause general side effects.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients. Children under 2 years old. Glaucoma, especially with a narrow angle or other severe eye conditions.
Precautions:
Treatment with tetryzolin should be discontinued when the symptoms of inflammation are worsening during the use of the preparation; the preparation is intended for the treatment of conjunctival irritants only of moderate intensity. It is not recommended to use the product during infection, corneal damage or during severe pain. The patient should discontinue the preparation and contact a doctor if there is no obvious improvement after 2 days of use. Caution should be exercised in patients with severe cardiovascular diseases (including coronary heart disease, hypertension), phaeochromocytoma, diabetes mellitus or hyperthyroidism, as well as in patients receiving MAO inhibitors and other drugs that increase blood pressure. In the event of severe eye pain, headache, loss of vision, sudden appearance of moving spots in the field of vision, sudden redness of the eyes, pain caused by light or double vision, the patient should immediately contact a physician. Prolonged use of the preparation may cause secondary irritation and congestion, burning and stinging symptoms as well as atrophic changes caused by chronic hypoxia of the mucous membrane of the eye. Tetryzolina after the recommended dosage does not cause dilation of the pupil, however, during excessive use there is a risk of dilating the pupil, especially in patients with a clear (blue) iris. The drug is not effective in the treatment of late-type allergic reactions, such as: conjunctivitis and eyelid skin inflammation. Avoid prolonged use, especially in children. During the use of the preparation, contact lenses should be discontinued (benzalkonium chloride contained in the preparation damages the lenses) - the lenses can be put on after about 15 minutes from using the drops.
Pregnancy and lactation:
There are no controlled examinations in pregnant women - the drug can be used during pregnancy only in case of absolute necessity. There are no data on the penetration of tetryzoline into breast milk - during breastfeeding, use with caution, only after considering the benefit / risk ratio.
Side effects:
Common: reactive hyperemia, burning and dry mucous membranes, palpitations, headache, tremors, weakness, excessive sweating, increased blood pressure, systemic sympathomimetic effects, e.g. arrhythmias, tachycardia. There may be blurred vision, conjunctival irritation. Rare: mydriasis. Very rare: hyperkeratosis of the conjunctiva with closure of tear points and excessive tearing. There is a risk, especially of newborns and children up to 2 years, symptoms associated with the absorption of the drug, including after ingestion - the most important side effects are: CNS disorders, increased blood pressure, arrhythmias, tachycardia, tachyarrhythmia, reactive bradycardia. Prolonged or too frequent use of the preparation may cause eye pain and burning, reactive hyperemia, blurred vision, conjunctival irritation, rarely mydriasis (especially in patients with a bright iris of the eye), in individual cases - general sympathomimetic effect.
Dosage:
Usually 1-2 drops into the conjunctival sac 2-3 times a day. Before using the product, the contact lenses should be removed and replaced again approximately 15 minutes after the instillation of the preparation. If the patient uses other eye drops, the interval between instillations should be 15 minutes.
