Bacterial infections of the eyelids and conjunctiva, caused by microorganisms sensitive to sulfacetamide.
Composition:
1 ml eye drops contains 100 mg of sulfacetamide in the form of the sodium salt. The preparation contains benzalkonium chloride.
Action:
Sulfonamide with local bacteriostatic activity, mainly against bacteria:Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus (group viridans), Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella spp., Enterobacter spp. Resistance to sulfonamides shows:Neisseria spp., Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and most strains of staphylococci. Sulfonamides inhibit the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid in bacteria, preventing the combination of pteridine with aminobenzoic acid by competitive inhibition of the dihydropterate synthetase enzyme. The product contains hydroxyethylcellulose, which prolongs the time of maintaining the medicine in the conjunctival sac.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to sodium sulfacetamide or any of the components of the drug. Do not use in children under 2 months of age.
Precautions:
Caution should be exercised when treating patients with hypersensitivity to loop diuretics, Furosemide, sulphonylureas or carbonic anhydrase inhibitors because of the potential for allergy resulting from cross-allergy. The preparation is not intended to be injected into the eye. In the event of the first signs of hypersensitivity, eg rash or other serious side effects and an increase in the amount of purulent secretion, worsening of pain or inflammatory reactions, the drug should be discontinued. Prolonged use of sulfacetamide may lead to infections caused by resistant bacteria and fungi. Caution should be exercised when using the preparation in patients with "dry eye" syndrome due to the possibility of sulphonamide crystallization in the cornea. If the use of sulfacetamide in these people is necessary, it should be used simultaneously with "artificial tears" or other eye wetting lotions. The preparation contains benzalkonium chloride, which may cause eye irritation. Avoid contact of the preparation with soft contact lenses and before applying the product, remove the contact lenses and wait at least 15 minutes before re-inserting. Benzalkonium chloride changes the color of contact lenses.
Pregnancy and lactation:
The preparation can be used during pregnancy only if the benefits for the mother outweigh the potential risk to the fetus. There are no controlled studies on the use of sulphonamide-containing ophthalmic preparations in pregnant women. Generally used sulphonamides can cause jaundice of subcortical nuclei in newborns. Therefore, you should decide to stop breast-feeding while using the product or stopping the medicine.
Side effects:
The most common are: local symptoms - tearing, burning, pricking, conjunctival hyperaemia, conjunctivitis, sometimes blurred vision or pain around the eye. Occasionally, eyelid edema, erythema multiforme and other hypersensitivity symptoms (eg rash, swelling of the skin, pruritus) may occur. Rarely during long-term use of the drops may appear fungal or caused by sulphacetamide-resistant bacteria corneal ulceration.
Dosage:
Adults and children ≥3 months: 1-2 drops are introduced into the conjunctival sac every 3-4 h for 7-10 days. After improvement, the interval between doses can be increased. After instillation, gentle closing of the eyelids and compression of the naso-lacrimal duct is recommended to reduce the systemic absorption of the drug. In the case of concomitant use of other drugs administered to the eye, a 10-15 minute interval should be observed between the administration of individual preparations.
