indications:
Herpetic keratitis -Herpes simplex keratitis.
Composition:
1 g of eye ointment contains 30 mg of acyclovir.
Action:
Aciclovir is an antiviral drug that works stronglyin vitro against virusesHerpes simplex type 1 and 2, virusVaricella-zoster. The toxic effect of the drug on mammalian cells is small. After penetration into a virus-infected cell, aciclovir is phosphorylated to the active compound acyclovir triphosphate. Aciclovir triphosphate is a substrate of the viral DNA polymerase and is incorporated into viral DNA by it, which results in termination of the viral DNA chain synthesis and inhibits its replication, without adversely affecting the normal processes taking place in the cell. Aciclovir found in eye ointment after penetration through the corneal epithelium and other superficial ocular tissues quickly achieves a therapeutic concentration in the aqueous humor.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to aciclovir or valaciclovir.
Precautions:
Immediately after applying the ointment transient smallish feelings may occur.
Pregnancy and lactation:
During pregnancy, use only if the anticipated benefits to the mother outweigh the potential risk to the fetus. After oral use, the drug is excreted in human milk; the dose obtained by a breastfed child whose mother has used an eye ointment is probably not significant.
Side effects:
Very often: superficial, focal keratopathy. Common: transient, slight burning occurring immediately after application of the drug, conjunctivitis. Rarely: blepharitis. Very rare: anaphylactic reaction, angioneurotic edema. Eyes of local irritation and inflammation such as blepharitis and conjunctivitis have been reported with eye ointment.
Dosage:
Locally. Adults and children: about 1 cm of squeezed ointment should be introduced into the lower conjunctival sac 5 times a day at intervals of about 4 hours, with a night break. Treatment should be continued for at least 3 days after the healing of the lesions.
