Helpful in relieving skin symptoms in chickenpox, zoster and insect bites.
Composition:
100 g of the suspension contains 1 g of benzocaine, 1.5 g of spearmint essential oil with reduced menthol content, 18 g of zinc oxide.
Action:
The preparation has local anesthetic, antipruritic, enveloping and astringent effects. Benzocaine acts locally anesthetically. Menthol contained in the essential oil irritates the sensory ending, causing the impression of cold and relieving pruritus. Zinc oxide has astringent, shielding, drying and weakly sanitizing properties.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to the components of the preparation. It should not be used on mucous membranes, open wounds, ulcers and body surfaces deprived of the epidermis. Do not use long-term and in young children.
Precautions:
In young children, the topical use of benzocaine may lead to methemoglobinemia and hypersensitivity reactions. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
Pregnancy and lactation:
There have been reports of possible harmful effects of benzocaine on the fetus. There are no data on the use of the preparation in pregnant or breast-feeding women; the drug can only be used if clearly necessary.
Side effects:
Allergic reactions and skin irritation. Topically administered benzocaine may cause burning sensation, pruritus, hyperaesthea, erythema, urticaria and edema; in rare cases it may cause methemoglobinemia. The occurrence of allergic reactions to peppermint oil and menthol has been rarely reported. Zinc oxide may increase the tendency of papulopustular changes as a result of blocking the sebaceous glands.
Dosage:
Externally: The affected skin should be lubricated 3 or 4 times a day. Shake before use.
