In addition, silymarin improves some biochemical indicators of liver function. In patients with chronic hepatitis, it induces an increase in serum albumin and normalization of increased alanine and aspartate aminotransferase as well as alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin. After oral administration, 20-50% of silymarin is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Up to 80% of the dose absorbed into the blood occurs in the bound form - in the form of connections with glucuronic acid and sulfuric acid. Approx. 10% of silymarin gets into the circulatory system inside the liver and undergoes reuptake in the intestine. Silymarin is mainly excreted in the bile (20-40% of the administered dose); 3-8% of the orally administered dose is excreted in the urine; the remaining part unchanged with faeces.
