Symptomatic treatment of coughs of various origins.
Composition:
5 ml of syrup contains 7.5 mg (Atussan) or 4 mg (Atussan mitte) butamate citrate; drug contains sorbitol and glycerol.
Action:
Non-opioid antitussive drug with central effect. Its exact mechanism of action is unknown. The drug has anticholinergic properties and dilates the bronchi, which facilitates breathing. It does not cause addiction or habituation. Butamirate in the form of an ester is quickly and well absorbed after oral administration. Then it is metabolized by hydrolysis to 2 metabolites (phenyl-2-butyric acid and diethylaminoethoxyethanol), which also have antitussive effects. The phenyl-2-butyric acid is partially metabolised by hydroxylation in a further step. Metabolites are excreted in the urine in the form of glucuronic acid connections. T0,5 is 6-26 h.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.
Precautions:
Due to the action of butamate citrate causing cough reflex inhibition, concomitant use of expectorants should be avoided, as this may lead to mucus in the airways, which increases the risk of bronchospasm and respiratory tract infections. Due to the sorbitol content, the drug may have a slight laxative effect; further, the drug should not be used in patients with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance. Due to the content of glycerol, the drug may cause headache, stomach upset and diarrhea. Syrup 7.5 mg / 5 ml not for children <3 years.
Pregnancy and lactation:
The safety of the drug during pregnancy and breast-feeding was not determined. Use in the first trimester of pregnancy is not recommended. In the second and third trimester of pregnancy, the drug can only be used if absolutely necessary. There are no data on the penetration of the active substance and its metabolites into breast milk. Administration of the drug during breastfeeding should be contraindicated for safety reasons.
Side effects:
Rarely: drowsiness, nausea, diarrhea, urticaria.
