The drug with antitussive effect. Dextromethorphan has an inhibitory effect on the cough center within o.u.n, and its potency is comparable to the equivalent codeine dose. Suppresses cough of various origins, reduces its severity and frequency. In therapeutic doses, it does not inhibit ciliary activity. Quickly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The antitussive activity starts after 10-30 min and persists in adults for 4-6 h and in children by half longer. It is extensively metabolised in the liver. It is believed that metabolites have a significant share in antitussive activity. There are large individual differences in the metabolism of dextromethorphan. It is excreted in the urine, mainly in the form of metabolites.
