Constipation of various origins (habitual and chronic constipation in bedridden patients, habitual constipation in the elderly, constipation after diet change, constipation in the postoperative period and others). Emptying the intestines before diagnostic tests and surgical procedures (rectoscopy, cholecystography, urography, X-ray abdominal examinations, radiological photos of the lumbar-sacral spine).
Composition:
1 tabl enteric contains 5 mg of bisacodyl. The preparation contains lactose monohydrate.
Action:
A laxative and carminative medicine that works directly on the large intestine. Due to the direct influence on submucosal coils, it increases intestinal cramping activity and stimulates peristalsis. In addition, it increases the amount of un-absorbed water and electrolytes in the large intestine, which also affects the laxative effect of the drug. Bisacodyl is transformed in the gut by mucosal enzymes to desacetyl bisacodyl and in this form it is absorbed and then excreted in the urine and bile (in the form conjugated with glucuronic acid). The bowel movement usually occurs after 6 h after oral administration (after 6-12 h if the drug is used before bedtime).
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to the components of the preparation. acute abdomen syndrome (including intestinal obstruction, appendicitis). Leśniowski-Crohn's disease. Ulcerative colitis. Bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract. Severe dehydration.
Precautions:
Long-term and systematic use of bisacodyl should be avoided, because it leads to increased constipation and inability to defecate without the use of more and more powerful laxatives and may cause disorders of water and electrolyte balance (including hypokalemia). If the use of laxatives is necessary every day, the cause of constipation should be sought. Do not use in abdominal pain of unknown cause when nausea or vomiting occurs. There have been reports of dizziness and / or fainting during defecation in patients taking laxatives, but it is not known whether they are due to stools or are due to a vasomotor reflex due to constipation pain. Do not use the drug in children under 4 years. Use of the preparation to empty the intestine before diagnostic tests and surgical procedures in children under 10 years of age with chronic constipation and patients of all ages requires medical supervision. Due to the lactose content, the preparation should not be used in patients with galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or malabsorption of glucose-galactose.
Pregnancy and lactation:
It must not be used during pregnancy unless clearly necessary. The use of the drug during breastfeeding is not recommended.
Side effects:
Very rare: allergic reactions including single angioedema and anaphylactoid reactions. Frequency unknown: abdominal pain, diarrhea.
