Prevention and treatment of diseases caused by folic acid deficiency: megaloblastic anemia, disturbances of intestinal absorption, sprue, malnutrition, alcoholism, psoriasis, diseases associated with chronic hemolysis (thalassemia, sickle cell disease), long-term dialysis. Secondary prevention of neural tube defects in women with an increased risk of their occurrence in the offspring (for the month preceding pregnancy and in the first trimester). Concomitant use of anticonvulsants, oral contraceptives or antimicrobial agents.
Composition:
1 tabl contains 5 or 15 mg of folic acid. The preparation contains lactose.
Action:
The preparation from the group of Vitamins B. It is metabolized in the body to the active form - tetrahydrofolic acid, which participates, among others in the synthesis of purine and pyrimidine compounds, DNA and RNA synthesis, amino acid metabolism. It also plays an important role in tissues in which numerous cell divisions occur, especially in the hematopoietic system, the gastrointestinal epithelium and fetal tissues. Taking folic acid in the period preceding pregnancy and in its initial period reduces the risk of neural tube defects. Its bioavailability is 60-90%. After oral administration, it is absorbed from the duodenum and jejunum. The maximum concentration in plasma reaches after 1-1.5 h. Metabolized and stored in the liver, and excreted in the urine as metabolites and in unchanged form, moreover, small amounts are excreted in the faeces.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to folic acid or other components of the preparation. Megaloblastic anemia caused by vitamin B deficiency12.
Precautions:
Doses greater than 0.4 mg (except for pregnancy and breastfeeding) should not be used without prior exclusion of megaloblastic anemia due to the risk of masking haematological symptoms with further development of neurological symptoms. Due to the lactose content, the preparation should not be used in patients with galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or malabsorption of glucose-galactose.
Pregnancy and lactation:

Side effects:
Allergic reactions (rash, redness, itching) and gastrointestinal disorders have been rarely observed.
Dosage:
Orally. Megaloblastic anemia: 5 mg daily for 4 months (always in combination with vitamin B12). Malabsorption conditions: 15 mg per day. Chronic hemolytic states and hemodialyzed patients: 5 mg per day every 1 to 7 days (for a month). Pregnancy, pre-pregnancy period in women with an increased risk of neural tube defects in their offspring: 5 mg a day for a month before the planned pregnancy and during the first trimester of pregnancy.
