Prophylactically or in conditions of deficiency of vitamin C during convalescence after infectious diseases, in poorly healing wounds and in smokers. Supportive in the treatment of anemia caused by iron deficiency, inflammation of the skin and mucous membranes of the respiratory, digestive and urinary tract.
Vitamin C - Ascorbic acid - plays an important role in oxidoreductive processes. It affects many metabolic processes, including the metabolism of phenylalanine, tyrosine, folic acid, noradrenaline, histamine, iron and carbohydrates. It takes part in the synthesis of lipids, proteins, Carnitine, as well as collagen, proteoglycans and intercellular substance. It determines the proper condition of blood vessels and supports the general immunity of the body. It is well and quickly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It binds approximately 25% to plasma proteins. Ascorbic acid is metabolized in the liver and excreted as metabolites in the urine. After administration of very high doses, it is excreted unchanged in urine and faeces.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to the components of the preparation. Do not give high doses (over 1 g / day) in kidney stones (oxalate), excessive excretion of oxalates through the kidneys and in disorders of iron metabolism.
Precautions:
Carefully use in patients with hyperoxaluria, deficiency in G-6-PD activity, a history of kidney stones, a tendency to form mineral deposits in the urinary tract, hemochromatosis, sideroblastic anemia, diabetes or thalassemia. It should not be used in patients with galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or malabsorption of glucose-galactose.
Pregnancy and lactation:
Ascorbic acid penetrates the placental barrier and into breast milk. Do not use in doses higher than the recommended daily intake (80-100 mg daily).
Side effects:
Daily doses above 600 mg may cause a mild diuretic effect. Long-term use of high doses of ascorbic acid (over 1000 mg per day) may cause nausea, vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea, stomach cramps, flushing, rashes, hot flashes, headache, insomnia and hyperoxaluria, which can lead to kidney stones.
Dosage:
Orally. Adults: preventive 100 mg daily, adjunctively 100-500 mg daily. Children over 5 years: supporting 100-200 mg daily. The tablets should be taken with food.
