Diosmin and hesperidin belong next to rutosides to the most important natural bioflavonoids
They are obtained mainly from citrus fruits (flesh, skin, pips). The extract is industrially produced by processing huge amounts of pips, fiber and pulp. The obtained material is an abundant source of polyphenolic compounds, such as: quercitin, hesperidin, neohesperidin, kamferol glycoside, naringin, apigenin, rutinozide, poncirina, etc. Final product. - isolated bioflavonoids - diosmin and hesperidin favorably improve the venous wall tension.
The healing effect of bioflavonoids
Their mechanism of action consists in inhibiting the enzyme hyaluronidase responsible, among others for the breakdown of hyaluronic acid, the main component of the vascular endothelium. In addition, the prolongation of the action (autooxidation) of ascorbic acid (vitamin C), which protects the vessel walls against toxic oxidants (okstadtantami) and is necessary for the production of collagen. Thanks to this, bioflavonoids protect the tightness of the walls of blood vessels. Acting anti-inflammatory by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators, they act protectively on their walls, contribute to the normalization of vascular permeability, and prevent hemorrhagic complications. This reduces the risk of edema due to vascular inflammation and its complications.1,2
Diosmin is well absorbed
In animal studies, oral diosmin has been shown to be well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, reaching a maximum blood concentration after 5 hours. In venous vessels with increased permeability and saphenous vein, the concentration of diosmin increases to 9 hours after administration and is maintained by another 96 hours; elimination of the preparation occurs mainly in the urine (79%), and also in the faeces and bile. ** 2
Indications for treatment
The indications for the use of these polyphenolic compounds are: symptoms associated with venous insufficiency of the lower limbs: the feeling of heaviness in the legs, pain, decubitus due to ischaemia. As well as symptomatic treatment in the case of exacerbation of ailments associated with anal varices. Contraindications are hypersensitivity to diosmin or hesperidin (or other components of the formulations in which they are administered). Caution should be used during pregnancy. Do not use during breast-feeding. Side effects are very rarely are nausea and vomiting. ** 2
Treatment under medical supervision
Therapeutically effective bioflowonids - diosminin, hesperidin - are available only on prescription and are beyond the reach of self-healing. However, knowledge and reminder about them is necessary for patients to become aware of the importance and effectiveness of plant preparations. Therefore, in the case of ineffective treatment of oedemas with leg edema or the onset of varicose veins - you can (and should!) Ask your doctor for guidance for further treatment.
