How common is the cutaneous form of anthrax infection?
This form of the disease is the mildest and the most common - it affects about 95% of registered cases of the disease and is most easily treated.
What disease does it start?
Anthrax spores penetrate through skin lesions, then they destroy immune cells - macrophages and start to secrete a life-threatening toxin. The most common cause is zoonosis. Human cases of anthrax occur in a certain proportion to the disease in animals. World statistics record, on average, 1 case of cutaneous anthrax in 10 cases of anthrax in animals.
Skin symptoms of anthrax
In the cutaneous form of anthrax, after a period of incubation lasting from several hours to 2 weeks, a small, red papule or pimple is formed at the place of penetration of spores. After 1-2 days the original change is transformed into a bubble filled with serous content; smaller bubbles surround it. After a further 1-2 days, the follicle is transformed into an ulcer that contains black dry necrotic masses on its bottom. The skin lesion may still be bandaged with a small bubble of bubbles. It is between 4 and 30 mm in diameter and is surrounded by a few- or several-millimeter zone of painless edema.
Systemic symptoms accompanying skin lesions
The formation of a black pustule (because this is the colloquial name for this change) is sometimes accompanied by a fever. There are also muscle and joint pains, there is a general-breakdown (flu-like symptoms). Untreated cases of cutaneous anthrax can go into sepsis and lead to the death of the patient, but in 80-95% of cases, self-cure occurs even without the use of antibiotics.
Malignant swelling in the form of cutaneous anthrax
Another, less frequent cutaneous manifestation of anthrax is the so-called Malignant edema. It occurs mainly on the neck and face. It has the form of rapidly progressing swelling with bruising of the skin, numerous bruises and blisters. Swelling can be so large that it makes breathing difficult. In some cases it is accompanied by a black kroście, and in some cases is an independent symptom of anthrax. As a rule, malignant edema is also accompanied by general symptoms - high fever, sometimes difficulty in breathing, sometimes disturbances of consciousness, delirium. In these cases, the patient's life may be at risk, and cases of spontaneous healing are much less frequent than in the black krost.
