The dominating symptom is severe abdominal pain, (growing under pressure), fever, often diarrhea; although there are also constipation. Stools can be tarry or contain fresh blood. In the majority of patients vomiting occurs, sometimes with bloody content. Ascorbic toxin may result in ascites, or fluid in the peritoneal cavity, or perforation (perforation) of the intestinal wall. Patient mortality ranges from 25 to 80%.
